Toasting yff10

Whilst the rest of you in Canada are just recovering from your long weekend, I am getting started into mine, as this is one of my favourite weekends of the year, Yorkton Film Festival weekend!!

In honour of the festival kicking off today and one of my favorite film festival goers and gin lover, Richard Gustin, I am raising a rather delectable glass of Sapphire Barcelona. A very lavish and luxurious tasting gin drink, made for kicking off film festivals in exotic locals, like Yorkton, Saskatchewan. So that you too can toast the launch of the film festival, here is Merlin Griffiths and Vancouver darling, Lorraine Murphy, concocting this delectable bevie:

Three Nights Left for a Good Laugh at Someone Else’s Wedding

Okay, I’ll admit it ….. sometimes other people’s weddings make me laugh.

Fighting Chance Productions' rendition of The Wedding Singer

I mean do they really need to spend over $10, 000 on one night (and I think that is likely on the thrifty side of weddings)?  Wouldn’t that be better spent on starting a life together?  Especially, as I think that $10, 000 is spent, in some cases, on just the dress. A dress for one night of your life that is often ironically white.  And then there is all the money you require your friends to spend on 10 different gifts for ten different showers, stag and does, bachlerettes, dresses that make you look hideous and cost you a small fortune, …….. therapy for dealing with you, the bride, when your freaking out over NOTHING!!!!

The Wedding Singer at Jericho Arts Centre

At one stage of the game, as a woman, this stressed me out and upset me.  Now it just makes me laugh, because really…. here you are, marry your Prince Charming and your stressing out, because the lilies you want aren’t in season?  Does somebody cast some sort of psycho mind meld on all (or just about all) future brides? Cause really being your best friends, this is not the normal sort of behavior that draws me to you and makes me love you.  Quite the contrary.

The Stars of Fighting Chance Productions' The Wedding Singer

So I laugh …. only that can be dangerous and is not really the politest or most cooth way to behave around someones impending nuptials.  So whats a gal to do?  Can’t speak for you, but I got my wedding laughter out for the season at The Wedding Singer.  There, laughter is encouraged.  They are playing for three more nights, if you need a good laugh too.

Kisses,

Emme  xoxo

A Kitty Scholarship

There is a kitty-shaped hole in my heart. I’ve lived kittilessly for years now, four years to be exact, ever since Van city became my home for school. Van city is one happening place, with fun streets and shiny water and cafes of every sort, but the need for a kitty is sometimes overpowering, and the cuddly little beasts on youtube can only do so much for this cuddle-lorn kitty piner. In fact, those painfully cute videos actually make it worse, for to think of kitty is to feel absence of kitty, n’est pas?

Not too long ago I took a stand and demanded that my kitty needs be addressed. As at the time my mother-and-provider was visiting, it was to her that I made my solemn entreaty. I was immediately and unceremoniously shot down as mother’s co-worker’s kitties had just run up an impressive doctor’s bill and left the co-worker pretty down and out. That’s right. A couple of hypochondriac kitties threw a wrench into my plans and now I’m back at square one.

Having waded through student loan and bursary forms and tax returns and tried my best to understand the intricacies of this bureaucracy, I decided I had grounds to apply for a kitty scholarship: awarded once a year to person(s) with a demonstrated need for a kitty. The winning applicant can claim their kitty by waiting for a kindly government official to arrive at my (er… I mean his/her) door step with a basket of mewling infants of which he/she may choose the companion (or two) he/she fancies best. If I pitch the idea seriously enough, I’m sure someone up there among the powers that be will take notice. Right?

Fashion Fun at JK Models’ First Birthday

A JK Model takes to the runway during the L2 fashion show

Models, manicures and Grand Marnier, what more could a girl want on a Wednesday night?  Plenty of fun was to be had at JK Models first birthday party and thanks to our little Emme being all booked up myself and Erica Hargreave got to slip in on the fun.  Owner Jennifer Koning put on a wonderful celebration in the heart of Vancouver at Leone’s.

We were really excited to see a modeling agency like JK hitting their first big milestone.  They represent a range of shapes, sizes and ethnicities opening up the world of modeling in Vancouver.  In a cut throat industry like fashion it can be tough to push for diversity and I was proud to meet someone like Jennifer who has taken on such a challenge and is succeeding.

The night gave us all a peek at some of her models during two runway shows, both which wowed the crowd, and of course this little photographer at the end of the catwalk. The first showcased clothes from L2 Leone, Leone’s edgy, contemporary boutique, and the second gave us a flavour of luxury with some designer garments from Leone.

The visitors were fully entertained between fashion shows with an array of enticing treats on offer that we fitted in alongside the mingling.  They included Pixstar‘s fun photo booth, where everyone could get four snaps with friends.  This was a stroke of genius on the organisers part, as many people mingled and chatted whilst awaiting their turn at a hilarious photo.  We had a few issues in the booth on first attempt, heads chopped off in the pics, people looking the wrong way.  But we soon got the hang of it and loved it.

She to Shic Boutique Beauty Lounge were also on hand to give mini manicures.  This was one of those rare moments that I wished I wasn’t a photographer as I knew my nails would never dry in time for shooting the next runway shoot, so had to pass on the treat.  And Grand Marnier kept the drinks flowing to a very happy crowd on a great occasion.

Naturally I’m all about the pictures so I’ll let my images do the talking for the event:

FFR’s Wiley Weekly Word: Mom

Seemed to be a special day yesterday for the two-legged bringers of food, so despite this being their job, mine is rather exceptional, so I thought I’d actually start writing again for her.  After all, her vocabulary tutelage has rather dwindled these last few months and goodness know, she could use it.

This week’s word:  Mom

Mom: This is not a word that we felines use, except with the feline that conceived us, washed us and fed us, in those first few days of life.  My two-legger refers to herself as my Mom, which leads me to believe that Moms are the creatures that feed us and respond to our every whim.  I refer to my two-legger as my servant, so maybe Moms are that, only I get a feeling that there is something more. Really hate to admit it, for fear that it will get my two-legger to big for her bridges, but I do believe that something more is Love.

‘My two-legger is somewhat of an exceptional Mom, as she acts as a wonderful heating blanket every night (only someone should really tell her that to be a blanket, she shouldn’t move), she cuts me up the succulent green little tree-like things, and she’s always there for a hug when I need one.’

My 'Mom' in all of cuddliness. Someone just needs to tell the silly two-legger next to her to move on. Those are my hugs.
