Weather Warning: Burnaby Blues & Roots to be Smoking Hot with Meshell Ndegeocello

Good thing Burnaby Blues & Roots Festival usually has a sprinkler tent, as with the smoking hot Meshell Ndegeocello on the stage this Saturday we are all going to need it.

Called everything from avant garde to part of a dying breed, Meshell Ndegeocello is unquestionably a fearsome bassist, prolific songwriter with the creativity and curiosity of an authentic musical force.

Meshell Ndegeocello ~ such a beautiful woman!

A bass player above all else, Meshell brings her signature warm, fat, and melodic groove to everything she does.

Looking forward to hearing her new sound, described as more peaceful and freer, kind of the mood I’m in these days.

A Polar Swim in Lynn Canyon

When I made my to-do list for the summer, going swimming at Lynn Canyon was at the top of my list. So when I recently had two friends visit from out of town, I took the opportunity to cross it off my list. For those who have never been, Lynn Canyon is a park in North Vancouver with a suspension bridge and hiking trails. The appeal for me has always been the thirty foot swimming pool a short walk after the bridge, where crystal clear waters create the perfect place to swim on a hot summer’s day.

The suspension bridge

The day we drove up to Lynn Canyon was warm but overcast – not the ideal temperature for taking a dip in glacier waters. The three of us set off over the suspension bridge, swaying fifty feet over the mountain canyon. Luckily, none of us were afraid of heights! We walked on to the swimming hole. When we arrived, there were a fair number of people on shore but no one in the water – it wasn’t close to being warm enough for that! But we were determined to have a swim, no matter how crazy it would make us appear.

30 Foot Swimming Pool

Feeling self-conscious of all the people, my friends decided to wade across the river to the other side, which was empty. They chose a path across and I reluctantly followed. When I’m swimming in cold water, I prefer to just dive in to get the worse part over with, rather than torturing my poor lower half. I followed my friends into the water, but my feet went almost immediately numb. It was just too cold. I couldn’t do it.

Fording the river

The two of them, however, successfully made it to the other side. Deciding at this point it was far too cold for a swim, I stayed safely on my side of the river with all the other sane people. As my friends pulled out towels and began to undress, a man next to me said in disbelief, “I think they’re going to swim!”

The two of them ran into the water, screamed, and ran out while I killed myself laughing on the other side. But they did it again and again, even cliff-jumping at one point. Afterwards, they admitted to me they had never intended on jumping and had just climbed up the cliff to look at the view. Once at the top, they had felt they couldn’t back out since everyone was watching them. One of my friends had almost killed himself cliff jumping in Mauritius a few years back, but still felt he had to jump because everyone was staring!

Cliff jumping

I eventually made it into the water too, but only after the sun came out. Once the sun came out, other people also arrived with the intention of swimming and we turned out to not be so crazy after all. The water was still freezing, but I didn’t feel so numb after diving in. We spent a good few hours just hanging out and swimming, cliff jumping, and making a picnic of our lunch.

Hiking back along the river

At the end of their visit to Vancouver, my friends said Lynn Canyon was their favourite thing they’d done on the whole trip, mostly because it was so “Canadian”. I suppose hiking up into the mountains and swimming in glacier waters is the sort of thing us crazy Canucks would do, and I was thrilled they enjoyed it so much.

So the moral of the story: Visit Lynn Canyon. It’s beautiful and you’ll have a blast. But do so on a very, very hot summer’s day, so you’re not the crazy people who chose to go for a polar swim in glacier waters. And don’t climb up a cliff with people around unless you intend to jump.

The Washboard Union Bringing Outlaw Bluegrass Blues to the 2012 Burnaby Blues & Roots Festival

Love that this day in a week’s time I will be kicking back to some bluegrass blues at the 2012 Burnaby Blues & Roots Festival with Canada’s only 7 piece crabgrass band of their kind, The Washboard Union ~ featuring Banjo, Mandolin, Dojo,Harp,Guitar, Fiddle, Mandolin , Drums, 4 singers and of course “The Washboard”!  Looking forward to this, especially as I’ll have Mr. Rob Jones at my side whispering all sorts of uber geeky music trivia in my ear!  Good times!

Aside from the fact that I personally can’t help, but find a band of blues playing men, who share images of their youth in their music videos endearing (yes, this tugs at my heartstrings), rumour has it this Outlaw Bluegrass Band has one of the most captivating live shows on the road today.  Can hardly wait!

With only a week to go until this year’s festival on August 11th, 2012, I suspect it’s going to be all blues all the time around these parts this week.

Bluesy Smooches,

Business Open as Usual in Storybrooke (Steveston, BC)

Arrived in the office this morning only to discover with disgust that Erica was out of coffee.  Annoying, but it did mean an excursion down the road to Steveston, which we love, and a latte from our favourite bean pusher, Steveston Coffee Co.  So you can only imagine the horror that hit when I realized that we weren’t in Kansas any more, but had magically found ourselves driving into Storybrooke.  Shoot!  Would we be able to leave this Once Upon A Time destination???  After all, would Erica’s magical powers, as Head Witch of the Hogwart’s Travelling School of Magic prevent us from leaving Storybrooke?  Not to mention the fact that despite not knowing what my magical powers are, I am clearly magical … how after all is that we came to be in Storybrooke this morning, when we were simply driving down the road to the Steveston Coffee Co???  Now, and more importantly, did Storybrooke have an open coffee shop?  We needed BEANS, or neither of us was going to be terribly magically.

Turns out Storybrooke Coffee Co. makes a darn good latte.

Low and behold, we found the Storybrooke Coffee Co, in much the same direction as the Steveston Coffee Co. They even sold our favourite Steveston Blend inside.  Shocking really, as I would have expected them to have a Storybrooke Blend (and how had they even heard of Steveston Coffe Co.), but then really there was nothing normal about this morning.  It was quite surreal that we were so lost, yet seemed to be experiencing so much deja vu.  It was like we’d been here before.  Right down to Gudrun’s, a watering hole situated next to Mr. Gold’s.

Never knew Gudrun was a franchise, but it must be as I found a second Gudrun’s in Storybrooke this morning.

Somehow we did find our way out of Storybrooke, although I’m not completely sure how.  Might see if we can find our way back there later today for a drink from that watering hole, as it would seem that they are open for business.

If you can find your way there, businesses are open as usual in Storybrooke today.

No Sinner at the 2012 Burnaby Blues & Roots Festival

If I were to name one genre of music that’s spoken to me this past year, hands down it’s the Blues. I have especially been taking great pride in the incredible Blues talent that we have on the Canadian music scene. I was reminded of this once again this evening, as I listened to yet another one of the great Blues bands that will be performing at the 13th Annual Burnaby Blues and Roots Festival, this time a local band, No Sinner.

Lead by the deep and smokey voice of Colleen Rennison, I can’t believe this woman is only 24, as her voice is elegantly seasoned in the Blues with the sophistication and maturity far beyond those of Colleen’s youthful appearance. I love how she is described in The Globe and Mail as “whose blow-to-the-gut blues could comfortably sit at the bar with Etta James and Bessie Smith”.  They further go on to say, “Vancouver’s No Sinner is turning heads with its hybrid of soul, gospel, blues, country and rock…”  After listening to No Sinner tonight, I can certainly understand why.

I’ll definitely be out dancing to them in my bare feet on the lawn at Deer Lake in Burnaby August 11th at the 2012 Burnaby Blues & Roots Festival, and I for one can’t promise to be no sinner when we’re talking about HOT Summer Days and the Blues.

Sultry Blues Kisses,

Emme xoxo

PS. In Full Disclosure: As always, the opinions and thoughts shared here are my own and honest ones. I am bought out by no one. In the spirit of disclosure, it should be noted that Burnaby Culture gives me a few Blues & Roots tickets each year, allowing me to celebrate my birthday in the best possible way.
