I think Orwell’s best work is his short story “to shoot an Elephant”, then “animal farm” My high school English students in NYC enjoy it. “1984,” although very relevant is a tough read for students. They get turned off. Fahrenheit 451 is a much better read.

Christmas 1996. Big snowstorm. Highway closed. Stranded for several days at the Gold Nugget Motel in Yale. Restaurant eventually ran out of food and we lived on convenience store Party Mix and the smoked salmon we got for Christmas. Nothing much to do but shovel show every morning. Nine months later, friends stranded with us had a baby.

I had my first driving lesson of sorts in Holland, Manitoba! I was actually too young to really drive at the time, but my dad wanted to take advantage of the empty streets for my first attempt. Did pretty well, but… it was scary for me!
