I’ve been listening to the stories from Haiti the last few days whenever I turn on the radio and been trying not to cry. Swallowing the tears back extra hard this morning, as I read the tweets from my friend Steven, who is in Haiti right now reporting on the disaster. As someone who has worked in media, I always question when reporters try to overstate a situation with staged images. I don’t question that with Steven. He is a reporter with integrity, and lives by a very similar ethical code to me. As such you will see no pictures of children or the dead, but what I am reading in his tweets is absolutely heart breaking.
I have long considered adopting, if I was unable to have children, as I love kids and I have a natural gift with them. But I always thought the right man in my life should come first and then we’d look at having children together. Well, really battling with that timeline just now, as I read Steven’s tweets from Haiti. So many children there that have already lived hard life’s and have now lost everything. Would so love to ask Steven to bring home a lost soul to me, so I could try and bring some happiness, security and comfort back into their life’s. Wondering if this is possible? Does anyone know, if the Canadian government is making it possible to adopt an orphan from Haiti? What is the process and how does one get started?
In the meantime, what people in Haiti most need now is survival items, such as water, food, blankets and clothing. Canadians can get such items and help to the Haitians by donating to one of the Haiti Disaster Relief Funds. I was also just contacted by a twitter account spreading the word on Haiti Disaster Relief @HelpHelpHaiti. Finally, if you have no money to donate, but still want to help, my friends at BuildDirect are donating $0.10 to Haiti Disaster Relief for every click on their site. Just click on the link there.
