New Tactics and Strategies in Dating

Post the Germany vs England footie match this morning (Sorry England …  Germany, I’m raising a pint of coffee to you), I was still watching the CBC, and Peter Mansbridge started exploring the growing concern over obesity in society, especially with young people.  Seems a fair bit of the concern is for increased health issues as overweight young people grow older and greater levels of concern in looking after themselves as they become seniors.  I listen to this and I glance down at my round belly, something I never had until this year.

Week One: The Beginning Shot to the New Year's Resolution

Some of you will remember my New Year’s Resolution to tone this up for my own well being, and will also remember that that DOESN’T mean dieting, but rather healthy living – good food, fresh air and exercise.  The good food part comes easily to me. Unlike concern over increased consumption of processed food on the CBC, I was brought up on home cooking and have taken that into my adult life. Where I’ve been struggling is that although I grew up outdoors, more and more I spend my days working in sedentary conditions at a computer, and whilst I started the year out with a healthy dose of fresh air and exercise, that went downhill with the month long Olympic Party, fueled with a healthy dose of hops and barley.  So as I revisited my Wheel of Life with my personal coach, Jennifer Priest, the other week, I noticed that I am still struggling to find a healthy balance in fun and recreation (which I consider to include exercise) and romance. And I think the two go hand in hand. I need to get OUT and be active way more than I am.

My Wheel of Life: January 2010

Some of you will recall that I’ve been experimenting with online dating for the past year or so, and whilst I was meeting some lovely men, it wasn’t really working for me.  Partially because I am a romantic and this was a rather contrived way to meet people, and partially because I spend my days working online and the last thing I want to do at night is to go back to the computer to create a personal life for myself.  It wasn’t working and I told Jennifer as much in our last session.  She had some great alternative suggestions.

A few ideas of Jennifer‘s to get me OUT and active and meeting people all at the same time are to:

  • Go to the Driving Range after work and hit a few balls.
  • Find a Hiking Group and join them for weekend hikes.
  • Go for a walk on my own or borrow a friend’s dog to take for a walk and actually make eye contact, smile and say ‘hello’ to people when I am out and about (scary concept for the VanCity cats, I know).
  • Join a Team Sport, with people I don’t know, like beach volleyball or dragon boating.

Not so outdoorsy, but goes well with the non-processed food, healthy eating part of my New Year’s Resolution, Jennifer also suggested singles cooking classes.  Definitely trying that one out.

Loving these ideas!  Especially as they get me outdoors and active and outside my comfort zone of my true blue friends (whom I love and adore, but am very quickly becoming the crazy spinster aunt to all their children).  Off to try my first one today (after the footie match that just started).  Found a hiking group and am going on my first hike with them.  Wish me luck!

Kisses,

Emme xoxo

Coping with the Election Hangover

In case you weren’t glued to the CBC’s election coverage last night, like I was.  Here is the aftermath.

Sadly the Conservatives (aka Reform in a vintage dress) did get in again, but not with a majority thank goodness. So essentially we spent $300 million during concerns for a recession to reelect a very similar government.  Personally thinking it may have been wiser to spend that money on health care, education and to stop cutting funding to the arts.

Some of the highlights for me:

  • Never thought I’d be impressed by the Block, as I am a very proud Canadian and would be horrified if Quebec separated, but I was impressed by them last night.  They were instrumental in keeping the Conservatives from a majority government and they spoke about many of the issues that are important to me – education, culture and the environment.
  • Loving Newfoundland and Labrador and the Yukon this morning.
  • Also impressed with Quebec and the Western Arctic.
  • Peter Mansbridge asking the political analyst if ‘Harper had failed’ and the political analyst confirming this.
  • Rick Mercer’s closing statement, “I’m just concerned that we’ve missed last call”

To my friends to the South, as Harper seems to mirror the actions of your President, I am counting on you – VOTE OBAMA November 4th!!!

Sexy & Savvy Tech Women Bridging Media

My dear readers,

Rumor has it that Van City’s sexy and savvy tech women are at it again – this time Bridging Media! In essence, they are aiming to break down any barriers of communication between the broadcast world and the technology community, get them to speak the same language by exploring each others processes, and finally to play nicely in the sand box, building the future of media together. These women certainly have balls, and I for one, don’t think they can be accused of not knowing how to use them!

According to my sources, this ballsy scheme was set into action from a series of conversations between Megan Cole, Boris Mann and Kris Krug of Raincity Studios, Erica Hargreave of Ahimsa Media, and Brian Schecter of Puddleduck Productions in the fall. As these cats were talking, it became apparent that there was an obvious disconnect in the understanding of broadcast process verses that of the digital world and to truly embrace the future the two communities needed to be working together.

Bridging Media

Megan Cole and Erica Hargreave have run with this initiating Van City’s first ever Bridging Media event on March 29th of this year. Boris Mann, Kris Krug, and Brian Schecter have been joined by Mark Greenspan on the gals advisory team. And as beautiful, sexy and smart women often do several other of Vancouver’s sexiest and savviest tech women have been drawn into the organizing mix, including Cinci Csere, Monique Trottier, Carol Sill and Monica Hamburg. Rumor even has it that the sultry Miss 604 will be live blogging the day.

From this gals perspective, the day is shaping up quite nicely with a panel of speakers that are none too sore on the eyes, including Ravi Singh of The Knowledge Network, Gary Marcuse of the CBC, Canadian Screenwriter Mark Leiren-Young and many of our lovely tech boys and sexy tech gals, who promise to be sharing secrets on industry, success, funds, and broadcast future! And you do know how I like secrets! It would also seem as though I am not the only one that feels that these women are up to something special. It appears that they have attracted in nextMEDIA, The Centre for Digital Media, The Knowledge Network, BC Film, OneDegree, Finale Editworks, and Now Public as sponsors. These companies know a good thing when they see it.

Oh and one final rumor from the event (probably shouldn’t divulge this one, as I’d personally like to win it) – I’ve heard they’re giving away a free pass to nextMEDIA to one lucky participant!

So shall we make it a date for March 29!?!
