Whooping it up for Literacy

In case you hadn’t heard, I am throwing a little bash all in the name of literacy! Specifically for The International Dyslexia Association and to launch our Reading is Sexy Campaign. Cause, as I just finished telling Daniel Reynish, I find nothing sexier than a man (or woman, for that matter) curled up with a good book (preferably in front of a roaring fire).

So to read between the lines, we are promoting literacy and raising funds for The International Dyslexia Association, and hosting a little party to celebrate that and the launch of 2010 Reading is Sexy Calendar.

Party Details

Cost: Free

Local: Gudrun Wine & Cheese Bistro (150-3500 Moncton Street, Steveston, BC)

Date: Thursday December 3, 2009

Time: 7 pm until late

Festivities:

general revelry and enjoying of Gudrun Goodies (I will buy a few plates for the room, but bring some money with you to enjoy more Gudrun Goodies and some of the yummy wines and beers)
readings from a few of our authors (Ian Ferguson, Mark Leiren-Young, Richard Yearwood, Lorraine Murphy, Rayne … to name a few … I may even read something from my yet to be finished novel)
calendar signings by the ‘models’ on hand (really, just because I think this would be bloody hilarious…. I’m thinking of signing in lipstick)
auctioning of some of Robert Shaer’s photos from the shoot for charity
…and I plan on dancing ….even if nobody else joins me

Why Gudrun? Because Patrick is in the calendar, I adore him and it’s my secret writing hideaway.

One Added Perk: If you so choose (although certainly not required), you can do a bit of your Holiday Shopping at the event as we will have the 2010 Reading is Sexy Calenders (with $4 of sales from each calendar sold at the event going to The International Association of Dyslexia) and books and CDs of some of our authors on hand.

Reading is Sexy

A few of you may have noticed that the past few months I have been tweeting with the hashtag #ReadingisSexy a fair bit. That’s because a few of us in town have been shooting a 2010 Reading is Sexy Calendar to promote literacy and raise money for the International Association of Dyslexia (totally ego-centric of course, as I have dyslexia). And secretly so that I could catch my literary buds in compromising positions on camera (with their permission, of course).

I’ve been a little nervous to talk too much about it until I knew everything was happily at the printers and we’d seen the proofs. Well, we did see them a couple of days ago and they look great and the finished calendars will be in Van City on November 30th. So we’ve just opened up pre-sale discounts for those of you that wish to buy a calendar or 2 or 3 or 5 before November 30th. Just check out our new store, Tantalizing Treats, for orders or submit them in person(with payment) with me or one of our salacious models.

So for more details on this sizzling little calendar. It is a wall calendar – 12” by 12”, 2 fold of course, and the gorgeous artwork between it’s pages have been brought to live by two terribly talented photographers, Robert Shaer (@robertshaer) and Tris Hussey (@trishussey). The cover is colour, but inside we’ve gone with classic, black and white shots. Stay tuned in the next few days for a few of their promo shots from the shoot. For now you’ll have to suffice with teases that I took during the shoots on my iphone.

Telling Tales From the Prairies: Lobster, Beer & Guns

Lobster, beer & guns, what more can I say other than ‘YORKTON, FUCK YEAH!!!!’

No pics of me (Erica squirted lobster juice all over me), but yes, I was wielding a firearm too!!!! And I fully nailed two skeet!! Yeehaw!!!

Oh and fyi, watch out for Tris. Have discovered that not only did he use to compete in axe throwing contest, but he’s also a damn good shot. Must be something about his American heritage. (Keeping one eye open)

A shout out to all my lovely peeps from the rocking town of Yorkton, Sakatchewan where Tris Hussey, Erica Hargreave and I are living it up at the Yorkton Film Festival!!!!

So tonight’s party hotline:

5 pm Kickoff BBQ in beautiful downton Yorkton (sponsored by Yorkton Business Improvement District) . So hurry up and put on your jeans, t’s and cowboy boots, it starts shortly and yes I will likely be fashionably late and no, I am not sure where in downtown Yorkton, but just follow the sound of the hoot’in and holler’in. (PS You need a BBQ pass for this one)
7 pm Screening of 45 RPM at the Painted Hand Casino (no idea what it’s about, but I understand it is a feature length film and is free for all)
Post Screening Reception (hoping and guessing there will be drinks)

Morning Saskatchewan,

Bright-eyed and bushy tailed this AM (despite ugly rumors from Mr Hussey suggesting I was over imbibing – really people, who are you going to believe) and excited to be getting on the Yorkton Party Train (bus) in a few short hours.

At any rate, wanted to drop a quick note, mentioning that I am going to endeavor to publish the evenings parties here each day (hopefully before the evening – I should be up by then). I am guessing that like at the Banff Television Festival, there are a slew of parties that happen that are not in the ‘official festival schedule’, so I need your help, especially since I am a ‘Yorkton Vigin’. Get on the Bus …. to Yorkton

Excited to be heading off to my first ever Yorkton Film Festival this week!!!! Going with Tris Hussey and Erica Hargreave to cover the lighter side of the festival. So if you want to read about boring interactive storytelling, social media, future of media stuff …..blah…blah…blah, then go read what they have to say on the m2o blog and on Bridging Media. On the note of parties, I do hear that the Yorkton Film Festival is not only THE oldest film festival in North America, but THE best party. And I do promote safe partying, so if your looking at how to get to Yorkton and are coming from Regina, leave the car behind and get on the bus.

That’s right! I’m busing it on what I like to call the ‘Yorkton Party Train’ (yes, I know a bus and train are two different vehicles, but ‘train’ just sounds so much cooler). You too could bus to Yorkton and hang with me (and Tris and Erica). And you can do it for free!!! Here are the details of the ‘Yorkton Party Train’ (aka the SMPIA Bus):

Very proud at recently teaching myself how to post flickr slide shows (or in all honesty for being able to follow Tris‘ instructions in posting) and I got such a kick out of the PJ Party pics, that I can’t help but share the pics from another recent party – the BuildDirect Floor Bashing. I mean really any party where they hand Tris and I a beer and a pick ax as we walk in the door deserves to be in the spotlight! They had chickens, hockey, boccie, and balloon stomping too!!! All from a penthouse overlooking Van City. I mean really what more could a gal ask for!?!

Crime Pays: Gallavanting in my PJs for Charity

Sweet!!!! Just discovered what the date is that’s being auctioned off with me. I am actually being encouraged to go out for the evening in my PJs!!!!! So perfect! I used to always go to the grocery store in my PJs during uni, much to the embarrassment of various family members. And now, I’m actually being asked to come out in my PJs. LOVE IT!!!!

So what exactly is said date involving PJs?

It’s the JetSet Crew’s Pajama Party at the Opus Hotel this coming Saturday, March 21st.

Good Morning World!!! And welcome to my new day!

I know you’re all dying to know what I’ve been up to and I could tell you, but then I’d have to kill you (or more aptly Fuzzywiggle Furrypants would and she doesn’t like getting her paws dirty).

In all seriousness, it’s time for some changes in my world – good changes – big changes. A little spring cleaning for the soul if you will. Starting the year off with a fresh new space and a fresh new look.

What are these changes that I speak?

Well for one, its time to finish the novel, ‘Single in the Suburbs’ that originally started me down this path. And then get started with my Mom on it’s sequel, ‘My Mom, the Junkie’.
Two, it’s time. I feel ready. For what? Well, some gals would say ‘their Prince Charming’, for me it’s ‘My Snuggly Old Blankey’.
Three. I’m striving for balance. I bit of a lofty goal I know, but if you don’t try, you’ll never succeed.

This new space is my journey to the above and it’s pages will be filled with the characters and settings that inspire me along the way, along with those heroes that do their best to catch me when I fall. Because no matter how independent we are, every gal needs her heroes .

Speaking of heroes, I would be most remiss if I didn’t mention two, aside from my family, that have really helped to inspire this new space and clarify it’s direction. An enormous thanks to Tris Hussey, you sexiest of devils, for the whisperings of WordPress themes and SEOs in my ear. And a great big thanks to Jennifer Priest, who is coaching me on finding my path to fulfilling my dreams. I’m finding my sessions with her to be incredibly inspirational, so I will share an account of my journey with her here.
