If I were to name one genre of music that’s spoken to me this past year, hands down it’s the Blues. I have especially been taking great pride in the incredible Blues talent that we have on the Canadian music scene. I was reminded of this once again this evening, as I listened to yet another one of the great Blues bands that will be performing at the 13th Annual Burnaby Blues and Roots Festival, this time a local band, No Sinner.
Lead by the deep and smokey voice of Colleen Rennison, I can’t believe this woman is only 24, as her voice is elegantly seasoned in the Blues with the sophistication and maturity far beyond those of Colleen’s youthful appearance. I love how she is described in The Globe and Mail as “whose blow-to-the-gut blues could comfortably sit at the bar with Etta James and Bessie Smith”. They further go on to say, “Vancouver’s No Sinner is turning heads with its hybrid of soul, gospel, blues, country and rock…” After listening to No Sinner tonight, I can certainly understand why.
I’ll definitely be out dancing to them in my bare feet on the lawn at Deer Lake in Burnaby August 11th at the 2012 Burnaby Blues & Roots Festival, and I for one can’t promise to be no sinner when we’re talking about HOT Summer Days and the Blues.
Sultry Blues Kisses,
Emme xoxo
PS. In Full Disclosure: As always, the opinions and thoughts shared here are my own and honest ones. I am bought out by no one. In the spirit of disclosure, it should be noted that Burnaby Culture gives me a few Blues & Roots tickets each year, allowing me to celebrate my birthday in the best possible way.
