FFR’s Wiley Weekly Word: Beldam

March 30, 2009 By Fuzzywiggle Furrypants Roo 3 Comments

This week’s word: Beldam

Beldam: Ancient two-legger of the female persuasion that hopefully has a good personality, as she is hard on the eyes.

‘I find it amusing to call my two-legger a beldam, not because she is ugly (she’s actually rather beautiful to me both inside and out), but because ‘she who prides herself on words’ misinterprets this word.  She thinks I am meowing ‘belle dame’, which is French for ‘beautiful woman’, so affection and treats are showered upon me.  Oh the irony of it all.’

Clearly a belle dame, not a beldam.
Clearly a ‘belle dame’, not a ‘beldam’.

I’d never heard this word before.According to Dictionary.com. ‘beldam’ is also synonymous with being an old ugly woman – a hag, or a crone. Save this one for an occasion where you’d like to insult someone, and confuse them at the same time.

I totally thought it said BEDLAM, as in ruckus and chaos. So I have to readjust now. Learning a new word is fun. I’m just saying, Netchick.

Rob – That’s exactly why the word is so much fun to use with my silly two-legger. She keeps thinking, I’m complimenting her. Makes me howl with laughter.

Colleen – Thank you! I feel it is important being from the superior feline species to make you two-leggers more literate. We felines do want our two-leggers to represent us well in public after all.

Sample the “Drink Me” Potion at Your Own Risk

Don't try to find a beginning or an end to this site, because there's not one. That will only cause you frustration and I don't have the money for your therapy bills. Mine are already expensive enough.
